A naming ceremony at Assin Manso is a profound cultural experience, honoring African ancestry and deepening the spiritual connection to Ghanaian traditions. As a historic site of the transatlantic slave trade, Assin Manso holds deep significance, especially for the African Diaspora reconnecting with their roots.

The Ceremony

Guided by local elders, the experience begins with a welcome and an introduction to the site’s history. Guests may take part in a ritual foot washing in the Slave River, a symbolic act of cleansing and healing, honoring ancestors who last bathed there before their forced departure. A certificate is provided as a lasting keepsake of this powerful moment.

Next, elders bestow a traditional Ghanaian name, chosen with deep meaning based on cultural significance, birth traits, or ancestral ties. Through prayers, blessings, and libations, the ceremony seals this reconnection, grounding participants in Ghanaian identity.

Why It’s Meaningful

This ceremony is more than a tradition—it’s a journey of self-discovery, healing, and cultural immersion. For those of African descent, it’s an opportunity to reclaim identity, strengthen ancestral ties, and foster a sense of belonging. Participants leave with pride, unity, and a renewed connection to Ghana’s history, people, and traditions.
