A Naming Ceremony
A naming ceremony at Assin Manso in Ghana
Service Description
A naming ceremony at Assin Manso in Ghana is a deeply symbolic & culturally rich experience, honouring both the history of African ancestry & the spiritual connection to Ghanaian traditions. Assin Manso, known as one of the historical slave trading sites, is a place of reverence, especially for members of the African Diaspora reconnecting with their heritage. The Process The ceremony begins with a welcome from local elders & traditional leaders, who explain the significance of the site & the sacred steps of the ceremony. Guests may be invited to participate in a ritual washing of their feet in the “Slave River,” a symbolic act honouring ancestors who last bathed here before being taken from the continent. This part of the ceremony is intended to cleanse & heal, symbolizing a renewal & reconnection to the land. Next, the individual is given a traditional Ghanaian name, chosen with intention by elders who consider the day of birth, character traits, or the meanings embedded in Akan culture. The naming is performed through prayer, blessings & the pouring of libations to invite ancestral spirits & the guidance of deities, grounding the individual in Ghanaian identity. A certificate is given as a memento of this profound experience, serving as a reminder of your reconnection to their roots. Benefits Participating in a naming ceremony offers a unique journey of self- discovery, healing & cultural immersion. For members of the African Diaspora, it is an opportunity to reclaim identity & foster a sense of belonging to a lineage & culture that may have felt distant. The ceremony instils a sense of pride, unity & spiritual grounding. Guests often leave with a heightened awareness of their heritage, a meaningful connection to Ghana & a renewed sense of self, enriched by the history & traditions of their ancestors.
